This was the 36th edition of the Spanish Super Cup and it was played in a different fashion from the previous years.

In February 2019 , the Spanish FA had announced that the competition would be changed from a two-team format to a four-team format, where the most successful teams in Spanish major competitions in the preceding season will be selected.

The tournament was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and was contested by Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valencia. Barcelona had been knocked out by Atletico Madrid in the semi-final, while Valencia was knocked out by Real Madrid. There was no third place match.

Sergio Ramos winning penalty ensured Real Madrid’s 11th Spanish Super Cup triumph. Atletico Madrid failed to convert their first two spots kicks with Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey missing from the spot, before Tripper could score from their third attempt.

However, Real Madrid scored all their spot kicks with Carvajal, Rodrygo and Modric all hitting the target, giving the Real Madrid captain the chance to seal a 4-1 Penalty shootout victory.

Elsewhere in Europe, Sergio Aguero breaks new Premier record as city trash Aston Villa.

Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Man City puts Six past Aston Villa. Sergio Aguero now has 12 Premier League hat-tricks making him the highest ever after passing Alan Shearer at 11.

That’s not all by the way, Thierry Henry had the most goals by a foreign player in the English Premier League with 175 goals in 258 games for Arsenal prior to City’s 6-1 victory against Aston Villa. With Aguero’s hat-trick, he now has 177 goals in 255 Premier League games.

Including English players, Aguero is fifth in the all time Premier League standings, and second in all time goals scored for a single club in the English Premier League, with Wayne Rooney claiming the first position with Manchester United.
