Real Madrid held down by Celta Vigo

Spanish league leaders Real Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by Celta Vigo despite the return of Eden Hazard who has been out with injury.

Celta Vigo ’s Smolov had opened the scoring in just 7 minutes into the game when he beat Thibaut Courtois in a one on one chance.

After the Smolov goal, Real Madrid mounted pressure on the visitors in the first half but all attempts came to nothing. Eden Hazard who recently returned from injury served a great cross to Casemiro but his header went narrowly wide, then minutes later the Brazilian also saw his shot hit the crossbar.

Real Madrid however knew they had to start scoring early on in the second half to stand a chance of winning against Celta Vigo, and Toni Kroos delivered with just few minutes into the second after he met the cross of Marcelo and hit it past the goal keeper.

Eden Hazard was a constant threat to the Celta Vigo defence and on the 63rd minute, the Belgian was fouled by Ruben Blanco in the box, and Sergio Ramos was there to score from the resulting penalty.

Los Blancos chased for the third goal to seal the match but all efforts were put to bed. Santi Mina of Celta Vigo who was recently brought on was able to find the back of the net in the 86th minute making the scoreline 2-2 and Real were unable to get a late winner.

Despite the draw Real Madrid are still top of La Liga with a point over FC Barcelona, while Celta Vigo are out of the relegation zone. There are 14 games left to play in the Spanish league.

Elsewhere, Tottenham and Arsenal boost their chase for a top four finish with both sides winning their games on Sunday.

Son Heung Min late winner puts Tottenham a point behind fourth placed Chelsea who will face Manchester United on Monday evening in the English Premier League.

Tottenham defeated Aston Villa with a 3-2 scoreline.
Arsenal who had a goalless first half were able to score four goals in the second half, with Pepe putting on a great performance by scoring one and assisting two.

 

Arsenal won 4-0 against Newcastle and are now seven points behind fourth placed Chelsea
