Manchester City crowned Carabao Cup champions
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have been crowned the Champions of the Carabao Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in Wembley. This makes it three times in a row for City winning the Carabao Cup and their fourth time in five years.
Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for Man City after just 20 minutes of kick off and Rodri’s header doubled the lead 10mins later.
The game was looking too comfortable for City as they were 2 goals up until Mbwana Samatta goal for Villa brought the tie to 2-2 with four minutes left of the first half.
Guardiola’s Man City pushed for the third goal in the second half and dominated Aston Villa in most of the half but Villa stood firm and almost forced the match into extra time when Bjorn Engels header was punched to crossbar by Claudio Bravo who started in goal for Man City. That was Aston Villa’s last chance of the game and Guardiola’sside did well to close out the game on 2-1.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola spoke to the media after the match: “Three times in a row is a big success. It’s the consistency, incredible.
“It was awesome. We struggled in the first minutes and the last ones. They had two clear chances in the first minutes, the header and the corner. But we played really well, especially second half with the 2-1. Sometimes you don’t know if you attack or just keep the result.”
“The game was good. Phil [Foden] was clinical. Big success, our second title of the season with the Community Shield, it’s so nice.
“We’ve won a lot. I tried when we arrive, every game we play we try to win it, every competition we try to win it, and three times in a row, being here and winning is great.”
Manchester City ’s next fixture will be against Sheffield Wednesday in the Fa Cup this Wednesday, before they take on Manchester United in the Premier League.
