Defending champions Liverpool have been knocked out of the Uefa Champions League by Atletico Madrid.

After losing 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the round of 16, Liverpool had to win the second leg with more than a goal difference to qualify to the next round, but the Spanish side were resistant as Oblak made incredible saves.

Jurgen Klopp side were 1-0 up at halftime with a goal by Georginio Wijnaldum, they pressed for the second goal in the second half but saw multiple shots saved by the Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Oblak. The match ended 1-0 at 90 mins and went into extra time to decide a winner, and Roberto Firmino put Liverpool in front with a beautiful goal.

 

The home side looked balanced until Adrian poor clearance gifted substitute Marcos Llorente an away goal making it 2-1(agg 2-2) .

Liverpool were in danger of going out on aggregate so they had to push for another goal against a composed Atletico side which were ready to hit on the counter. Unfortunately for the English side, Marcos Llorente scored a beauty in the 105th minute to set the scoreline at 2-2 (agg 2-3). Former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata summed up the disastrous night for the home side after scoring in the last seconds of extra time.

 

The absence of Allison was very crucial to the Liverpool side which played very well until the mistake by replacement goalkeeper Adrian. The English Premier League is now the only possible silverware Jurgen Klopp side can pickup at the end of the season as they have just two more wins to seal it.

 

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain who lost 2-1 at Dortmund in first leg of the round of 16 tie came back to win 2-0 at home in a match that was played behind closed doors. Neymar opened the scoring for PSG and Bernat doubled the lead just before halftime.

Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool joins Leipzig and Atalanta as the first four teams to qualify for the quarter final, and the next four will be decided next week.
