10 Ghanaian Actors Who Have Left Indelible Marks In Nollywood
Over the years, Ghanaian actors have accommodated by their Nollywood counterparts. This did not just start all of a sudden. In the early 2000’s, a Ghanaian producer, Abdul Salam Mumuni signed a contract with the management of Nollywood.
The contract was to enable Ghanaian actors join their Nigerian counterparts in Nollywood production thus giving them fame. Through this contract, many Ghanaian actors began acting with Nollywood actors and became very famous. We will be looking at ten Ghanaian actors who have left indelible marks in the Nollywood industry.
1. Majid Michel
Born September 22, 1980 to Ghanaian mum and Lebanese dad, the actor started by joining a modelling agency and after various auditions, landed a role in TV series ‘Things We Do For Love’.
His first movie appearance was in ‘Divine Love’, a 2004 movie. He was among those whom Abdul Salam brought into Nollywood and so, he made his debut Nollywood appearance in ‘Emerald’. The actor who is known for romantic scenes is now a Pastor and has stated that he will no longer take on roles that require him kissing an actor, in an interview he revealed Genevieve Nnaji taught him how to act. Nigerian movies he acted include: Forgetting June, 30 Days in Atlanta, Being Mrs Elliot, Knocking on Heaven’s Door. He’s a married man with 3 children and has won several awards.
2. Van Vicker
Joseph Van Vicker was born to Ghanaian/Liberian mother and Dutch dad. He started as a radio presenter on different stations. His first movie appearance was also in ‘Divine Love’. He was part of those Abdul Salam brought into Nollywood. Van Vicker got married to Adjoa LaRika in 2003 and they have five children(2 from his previous marriage). The actor is also a movie producer and CEO of Sky + Orange Production. Nollywood Movies he acted include: The Kingdom Against The Law, Stolen Will, Heart of Fire, etc. He has won numerous awards and is known for romantic scenes. He graduated from African University College of Communication in 2021.
3. Nadia Buari
The screen diva was born in Sekondi-Takoradi Ghana and was already a member of Drama and dance club in the University. She started her acting career with 2005 Ghanaian series ‘Games People Play’. Her first movies role was in “Mummy’s Daughter” but “Beyonce-The President’s Daughter” brought her to stardom same as ‘Beyonce & Rihanna’. In 2013 Nadia produced her own movie, she hopes to be a Hollywood superstar. The actress who has won several awards has been linked to different celebrities in the past including Dbanj. She is a married woman of 4 beautiful girls. Nollywood movies she acted include: Behind a Smile, Rough Rider, Hot Romance, Deranged, Hash tag, American Driver, etc. She runs a foundation and is the owner of a baby diapers manufacturing company.
4. Jackie Appian Agyemana
The Canadian born actress joined the Ghanaian movie industry in 2001 and then acted TV series ‘Things We Do For Love’.
She rose to fame in 2008 after acting Ghanaian movie ‘The King is Mine’. In 2007 she joined Nollywood and made her Nollywood debut in the movie ‘Sleep Walker’. Other Nollywood movies she acted include: Princess Tyra, Beyonce-The President’s Daughter, Forbidden Fruit, Celebrity Marriage, Deep Fever, Kakalika Love, etc. In 2005 she married Peter Agyemang but they separated three years later and the divorce was finalized in 2012. They both have a son.
5. Yvonne Nelson
Born on November 12,1985, Yvonne is a model who was never wanted to join acting even after she was invited by Abdul Salam. She later gave it a thought and contacted him. Her first movie was in ‘The Return of Beyonce’ while her first lead role was in 2007 popular Ghanaian-Nigerian movie ‘Princess Tyra’. In 2011 she produced her first movie ‘The Price’. Yvonne is not yet married but has a daughter for her ex boyfriend Jamie Robert.
6. John Dumelo
The 37 years old actor and politician started acting as a kid in 1990 and in 1991 he acted his first movie ‘Baby Thief’ at age 7. He acted a role in Ghanaian TV series ‘Sun City’ and came into limelight in 2008 after acting ‘The King is Mine’. He debuted in Nollywood in 2007. John is known for his romantic movie roles and has won many awards, he is the owner of a clothing line. He has acted several Nollywood movies and is married to Mawunya Nkornu, they have a son together.
7. Juliet Ibrahim
Born to Lebanese dad and Ghanaian/Liberian mum, the 35years old actress debuted in 2005 with the movie ‘Crime to Christ’.
Her first Nollywood movie was in ‘Yankee Boys’. She produced her first movie in 2014 and presently runs a TV series ‘Every Woman Has A Story’. She is married to a Nigerian Disc Jockey, V.J Adams in 2020. Her first marriage with Kwadwo Safo Jnr produced a son. Movies she acted include: Lost Desire, Tattoo Boys, Princess Rihanna, 30 Days in Atlanta, 10 Days in Suncity, etc.
8. Yvonne Okoro
Her mum is a Ghanaian while her dad is a Nigerian. She debuted in 2002 when she acted ‘Sticking to The Promise’, a movie produced by a Nigerian. Okoro is the CEO of Desamour Company Limited and has acted several movie which include: Agony of Christ, Ghana Must Go, Why Marry, Rebecca, Pool Party, etc.
9. Christ Attoh
Christopher Keith Nu Attoh is an OAP, actor, TV resenter and producer. He started with the TV series ‘Tinsel’ and has acted several movies which include: A Trip to Jamaica, Lotana, Sylvia, etc. He married actress Damilola Adegbite in 2015 and in 2017, they got divorced.
They both have a son. In 2018 he married Bettie Jennifer who was murdered in 2019 in US. He was reported to have gotten married to Chinecherem Eze in 2021.
10. Kofi Adjorlolo
The actor and producer starter as a singer. In 2003 he joined the Ghanaian movie industry and debuted in ‘The Chosen One’. Movies he has acted include: A Northern Affair, Princess Tyra, Agony of Christ, Somewhere in Africa, Ghana Must Go, etc. He is a divorcee who has divorced twice.
