British-Nigerian Politician, Kemi Badenoch Appointed UK Trade Secretary By New Prime Minister
UK’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has appointed a British-Nigerian Politician, Kemi Badenoch into her cabinet as the new UK International Trade Secretary.
Badenoch, who ran in the leadership contest against Truss, was a minister at the U.K.’s leveling-up department until she joined dozens of colleagues in resigning from Boris Johnson’s government in July over his handling of a number of scandals.
She came fourth in the leadership race after picking up the key endorsement of Michael Gove and it briefly appeared as if she might make it to the final run-off with Tory members.
Badenoch takes over from Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who has been appointed as secretary of state for transport.
Badenoch, who has been outspoken on issues such as gender-neutral toilets which she opposes, stood on an “anti-woke” platform and argued for the state to be slimmed down.
The former software engineer worked in banking and later as a director of the Spectator magazine before being elected to the London Assembly.
She entered the Commons as MP for Saffron Walden in 2017, and lists her interests as including engineering and technology, social mobility and integration.
